In utter fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as __68__ as she could.

Hearing her __69__, the little boy became alarmed and made a return to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him.

Ⅹ. Read the passage and choose the best answer.

When I arrived in Thailand four years ago, mai chai, which translates as “not yes,” seemed an awkward phrase. I soon realized, however, that it becomes even more unmanageable when a polite ending is added to it, as it often is. Then, it becomes mai chai ka if a woman is speaking, and mai chai krub if a man is. It’s far more complex than the simple “no” in English.

Thai people don’t like to say “no”. This is more than just a language quirk(古怪之处). It reflects much about Thai society that isn’t clear to outsiders until they’ve spent some time in the country.

Thailand is famously known as the Land of Smiles, and its residents pride themselves on being polite and helpful. Thai people are taught to be more concerned with what’s best for the group rather than what suits them personally. Perhaps this is why “no” is always tempered(缓和)with a “yea.” “Not yes” seems to imply their regret at not being able to agree to your requests in one small phrase.

“Thai people don’t often tell you ‘no’. They always say ‘yes’ and may go on to explain later why they can’t do something,” said Rachawit Photiyarach, intercultural communication professor at bangkok’s Kasetsart University. “A Thai person will say “yes” because social etiquette(礼仪)dictates that they do.”

Thais strongly believe in maintaining good relationships. In a developing country where life can be hard, people stick together and try to help each other. Harmonious relationships take precedence over being right or wrong. Thais avoid saying “no” to keep the peace.

During my stay in Thailand, I realized it’s necessary to know that whatever it is that you’ve requested, the answer may not be “yes” -- in fact, it might be “not yes” -- but it will rarely be “no”. And I began to admire the way that Thai people often said “yes,” even at the cosplayt of their own wants and needs.

75. If a manager asks, “Can you work on Saturday?” the Thai employee might answer, “_______”.

A. No, I’m sorry I can’t

D. Yes, but my parents are coming for dinner at my home

76. Thai people don’t like to say “no” because_______.

①to say it in Thai is not easy

②Thai people pay comparatively less attention to their personal interests

③Thai people are good at telling right from wrong

④Thailand has a tradition of keeping the peace

A. ①②③      B. ①②④       C. ①③④        D. ②③④

77. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “precedence” in paragraph 5?
